This mini retro camcorder is the perfect Christmas gift – I know what I’m getting my nieces this year

Camp Snap has announced the CS-8 Mini, a kid-friendly version of its Super 8-style lo-fi digital video camera.

Designed for smaller hands, it takes all the functionality of the original CS-8 and shoves it into a Super 8-style body that’s about half the size, weighing just 262g. It’s a Camp Snap camera, so of course, it’s screen-free, meaning that videos can’t be viewed until they’ve been downloaded off the pre-installed 4GB card onto another device.

As with the original, recording is activated simply by holding down the trigger in the handle – and stops when the trigger is released. The CS-8 Mini offers five digital filters to give imagery a series of different nostalgic looks: Standard (true-to-life color), Vintage 1 (soft and faded), Vintage 2 (a warm look), Analog (grainy, 8mm-style) and Black & White (monochrome).

The sensor is a 1/2.7-inch type, shooting video only at a maximum resolution of 2.7K and a frame rate of 24p (or 18p in the Analog mode). It records audio via built-in microphones, and offers four aspect ratio recording options – 9:16 vertical, 16:9 horizontal, 1:1 square, and 4:3. While the lens is fixed, the CS-8 Mini does offer a digital zoom functionality, activated via the ‘W’ and ‘T’ buttons on the side of the body.

In order to make the camcorder more appealing to kids, Camp Snap has also released the CS-8 Mini in four bright colourways: pink, orange, green and blue.
