I recently read a story that declared that the iPhone camera struggles with the gorgeous autumnal hues of fall leaves, believing that the yellowish/orangish tones in an image are an unwanted colour cast and overcorrecting them to leave a washed-out, cold-looking shot.

There’s even been reports that sticking a hand in the shot “fools” the iPhone into warming the tones back up – but obviously you don’t really want hands in your iPhone photos. The problem here seems to be white balance going wrong – which on a normal digital camera would be an easy thing to fix.

The problem here is that most iPhones don’t have any manual control within the native camera app, and although the latest iPhone 18 Pro allows you to change white balance to sort that out, I’ve got an even simpler hack that you can use – and it’s applicable to older models of iPhone too.

I’m talking about switching up your Photographic Styles. And the even better news is that if you’ve already shot a bunch of fall leaves and found them a bit bland, I can fix them for you without you having to leave the house to reshoot them again. Amazing.

You can shoot with Photographic Styles set to the style of your choice, or you can edit existing photos to change to a different style. In order to do this, you will need to be shooting in the HEIF format – these days that’s the default shooting setting, so you probably already are.
